How is a dental implant installed?

Many people can feel extremely nervous about the idea of dental surgery especially with dental implants. The process of installing a dental implant is actually much easier than many patients may think. The nice part about getting some of these implants installed is that they often work much more reliably than false teeth and can feel quite natural after the healing process is completed. Here are some of the basic steps involved in dental implant installation:

Implants are first crafted of titanium and these are generally all the same. The implant route is usually first placed in the upper or lower jawbone where the missing tooth may be.

The abutment is then crafted to sit on top of the implant. This will be the connecting piece between the tooth and the top crown which will resemble the natural tooth. This section is usually made of porcelain, titanium or gold and it will be attached directly to the implant with a screw.

The restoration section: This crown section is generally made out of a porcelain that is used directly with metal alloys. The crown will be cemented or screwed directly into the abutment and then covered with tooth material or composite.

Generally this entire process takes around 5 to 6 months depending on whether or not the implant goes into the upper jaw or the lower jaw. There are separate surgeries for placing the crown as well as the implant itself. The implant surgery takes place first to make sure that the bone is able to build up over the implant before the crown is installed. After the process is completed the dental implant can resembling natural tooth and provide the same type of support that you would receive from a natural tooth.
